Many people enjoy using frothed milk on their
coffee or espresso. Frothed or steamed milk can really enhance the
flavor of your coffee beverages.
You do not need to have your coffee drink at a
fancy cafe to enjoy frothed milk. It is possible to create frothed
milk for your coffee or espresso right at home.
The first step is to fill a jug with the
necessary amount of milk making certain to use very fresh milk. It
is essential that you leave enough space in the jug to allow the
milk room to froth and expand. Typically, it is ideal to fill your
metal jug approximately one third of the way full.
Next, you want to heat the milk being careful
not to boil the milk, as boiling will create an unpleasant burnt
taste. To keep track of the temperature, leave your hands on the
metal jug. As soon as the metal becomes too hot for your hand, it
is ready to work with.
If you plan to froth milk on a regular basis, it
may be wise to invest in a milk frothing thermometer that will
allow you to keep exact track of your milk temperature.
You always want to start with milk that is cold
because this gives the milk the chance to froth before it is fully
heated. If you work with milk that is warm, it will not be given
the chance to froth before it starts to boil. By the same token, if
you start with milk that has ice particles in it, it will not froth
properly.
It is not just the temperature of the milk that
is important when you are creating froth. The type of milk you use
will make all of the difference as well. It is essential that you
use a full cream or semi-skim milk to create your froth. Never use
a full skim milk, as it does not froth as well.
You may find when creating milk froth that you
need to experiment somewhat. This is because the brand, batch and
the time of year you are working can also make a difference in your
frothed milk results.
When making an espresso, if you need to, you can
get your machine ready to produce steam. Run the steam into an
empty cup for a few moments to allow any water that may have
condensed in to steam want to empty.
Place the tip of the steam wand in the milk
towards the bottom and open the tap for the steam. Bring the tip of
the steam wand to the surface of the milk allowing it to suck up
some air to create the froth.
Aim to create a swirling motion in the milk to
allow the bubbles to mix through the milk to produce a uniform
texture.
When the froth starts to build up, the milk will
rise and at this point, lower the jug while keeping the top near
the surface. Keep this process up until you have the amount of
froth that you desire.
Slowly move the tip of your steam wand down
towards the bottom of the jug. This procedure will heat the milk
thoroughly. Now, turn off the steam tap and remove the wand.
If you find that you are left with some large
bubbles on the surface of your milk, tapping the jug on the counter
should allow them to break. Swirl your milk in your jug before
pouring into your espresso.
Frothing milk can be a little tricky the first
few times, but with the proper tools and a little practice you will
be enjoying delicious coffee beverages in no time at all.
